This 2 euro commemorative coin celebrates the 700th birthday of the Italian writer Boccaccio. Boccaccio was born 700 years agon (in 1313) in Florence or Certaldo. Hij was a democrate and follower of the humanism. His masterpiece, the Decamerone, describes the diversity in society of the 14th century with an unseen realism for that time. He is seen as the founder of the prose in Europe. He died on December, 21 1375 close to Florence.
